Win a Toddle Bike for your Toddler

by CoombeMill 7 May 2013 13:50

When Jo from Toddle Bike contacted me about her new concept first balance bike range I knew instantly this was one for Coombe Mill. I had seen bikes without pedals before, but never one so perfectly targeted at the 18 month to 3 year old age group.

What makes Toddle Bike special?

I have 6 toddle bikes around Coombe Mill and have been watching our guests using them over the past month. I can now say from firsthand experience that these are the main benefits:

Durable.

Bright fun colours.

Lightweight and portable even for a toddler to carry around!

Work equally indoors and outside.

Easy to wipe down and clean.

Easy to ride from the very first go.

Inexpensive at just £23.95 including UK delivery currently from the Toddlebike Shop

Loved by toddlers who can feel like big kids learning to balance and cycle.

Seeing is Believing

Clearly I am a fan having seen the bikes and the wonderful times children here at Coombe Mill have been having. The bikes are located in our toddler play ground and inside our larger properties. As they are so portable they regularly migrate around the farm and further afield too, which is fine with us so long as they come back home at the end of a busy day in use.

In the Toddler Play Area where the bikes live and round the Coombe Car park the tarmac surface is perfect for a beginner:

The More adventurous take their Toddle bike out on the farm. Spot the older children joining in, just to prove how durable they are:

Our lovely sandy beaches are perfect for a Toddle bike, though you have to watch out for the tide when they are abandoned to play in the sand:

Win a fantastic Snooze Shade for baby's travels with Coombe Mill

by CoombeMill 3 April 2013 23:09

Travelling with young children

The clocks have changed; summer is officially with us and getting out and about with the children on the increase over the summer months. When you have very young children in tow then you want them to fit in with your activities and be as happy and safe as possible too.  From an afternoon nap in the pram to an overnight in a hotel room, having a way to recreate the darkened room they enjoy in their own home can be the difference between a happy child and a grumpy sleep deprived child, not to mention the knock on effect for you as a parent.

Snooze Shade has the complete solution

I have had the pleasure of receiving the quality darkened cot cover and pram shade from the lovely Cara Sayer who owns Snooze Shade. Cara is a Mum who created Snooze Shade out of her own frustrations of travelling with her little girl. From a trip to the shops to a holiday this is a product range that can make a difference. These products are made to a high standard from fully soft and breathable fabric, they are light weight, easy to pack and adjust to fit all travel cots and prams. We have a full range of cot sizes here at Coombe Mill and I tried the cot cover on each style finding it could be adapted easily with the elastic edging and Velcro tabs to fit all of ours including some of the larger wooden cots.

Over on the www.snoozeshade.com/ website there are some excellent videos demonstrating how to put up the snooze shade range and all the versatility of use. Do take a look, but be warned, you will want one after watching! Cara has deservedly won many awards for the range.

Tried and Tested

With no children of pram age myself I have been offering our holiday guests a try over the past season. I can vouch to the quality as they come back each time looking as good as new with no wear and tear. The pram cover was a universal success doubling up as a darkened napping place and a sun shade in one. The Cot cover was favoured by most, though some with older toddlers who had never tried anything like it before said their child didn't like the enclosed sensation on full sleep mode.  Snooze shade have thought of this and there is a zip which goes across the whole of the top and the sides to allow you to make it as enclosed and darkened or as light as you choose. If I had the chance to use one I think I would use it from the start with a new baby and take advantage of the zip according to the time of year, age of child and natural light in the room. I could have saved myself endless stubbed toes on the end of beds in unfamiliar rooms being able to turn on the light and find my way to bed safely without worrying I may disturb the baby I finally got to sleep!

Win the Twisted Tales books for Reluctant Readers

by CoombeMill 11 February 2013 10:37

Feeling like the perfect supportive parent

If you have a child who is happy to read, makes good progress and takes to independent reading, it is easy to feel like a conscientious parent doing well by the education system and your child. My eldest was like this. We had a few complaints in the early years about 10 minutes reading after school, but he learned fast, and soon was devouring the whole of the Famous Five series and moving on, with and ahead of his age, into more and more complex adventure stories. Christmas and birthday presents were easy as every relative wants to indulge children in *sensible* educational presents.

When reading is a chore

However I went on to have five more children and they are not all so easy! Some genuinely find reading hard; we spend extra time with them and invest in extra after school lessons, but they are still falling behind in their reading, are labelled dyslexic and still not reading independently and certainly not for pleasure. This then has the double effect of the child not managing to read books of interest to them and being restricted to younger content with more basic language which intern fuels the disinterest.

Inspire them and boost confidence

Twisted Tales

When I was contacted to review a new range of three books from My Little Big Town Publishing for reluctant readers age 5 - 12 years I was keen to give it a try. 'Twisted Tales' as they are called all have a moral behind them, a story line that makes you want to know what happens next and sentences that rhyme helping to anticipate words. The illustrations are fun and the real key is that it looks like a thick book but actually only has a few lines on each page, so the sense of progress through the book really encourages a sense of progress in what is being read.

My Reluctant and not so Reluctant Readers

They had a thumbs up from my reluctant readers and confident readers alike and I would recommend them if reading is a struggle with your children.

About Twisted Tales

 Pale Henry

Pale Henry

A young boy who has spent his whole life hidden away in his attic, afraid to go outside to play with the other children. Pale Henry shows children to make an effort to make friends and to play with others, but also to not worry about being different or a little strange. The book is intended to encourage children to be themselves, even if it’s not how everybody else around them is. (Ages 7+)

Stuart the Bug Eating Man

Stuart The Bug Eating Man

A short, humorous poem about a man who eats insects. He decides to use his ‘talent’ to his advantage and becomes a pest control man. Shows children to make the most of their talents, whatever they may be. Even though Stuart’s talent is a strange one, he uses it to his advantage, works hard and becomes successful. (Ages 5-8)

Jenny

Jenny

An eight year old girl has a secret... she is not an average eight year old. In fact, Jenny is a Werewolf hunting eight year old...The werewolves in the story are scary, but still funny and little silly (much like very big dopey dogs). In fact Jenny eventually captures one and keeps it as a pet, by trapping it in the cat-flap on the back door to her house. (Ages 7+)

Win a personalised tablet/phone sleeve with Coombe Mill

by CoombeMill 26 December 2012 16:47

1Triplet Joy

Can you imagine the excitement on my triplets faces when the tablets they had dreamed of and saved towards were finally opened on Christmas evening? They were overjoyed and despite it being 7pm on that special day evening they were desperate to open it up and have a play. With three older siblings and a propensity to lose or break things I was very keen to find a way to protect these new expensive and treasured devices. The lovely Sarah at Silver Birch Crafts had just the answer. Sarah makes all sorts of personalized gifts for every occasion from the most amazing fabric collection including sleeves for phones, tablets, kindle and i-pods; whatever your device, Sarah can make the perfect quality sleeve. I was thrilled when she offered to make sleeves especially for the triplets and from her wonderful selection I chose these three designs for my gang.

Sleeves for the Triplets tablets

They arrived beautifully packaged and labelled and I can see why Sarah has such a thriving on line gift business. It felt a shame to unwrap the pretty tissue paper and ribbon in favour of Christmas wrapping paper! However once one Clio found hers, the boys hunted frantically to see if they had one too, of course they did and can you image 3 more delighted faces? Hardly a squeak was heard for the rest of the evening!

Triplet joy with tablets and sleeves to match
