Mother's Day Fears

by CoombeMill 10 March 2013 23:20

Low expectations

When the children were young, there was always an anticipation on Mother's Day; the expectation of some artistic triumph from Nursery or Playgroup that they would be bursting to give me at some ungodly hour on the big day. It was a delightful early morning call and one which I feared would not be facing me this year. It did make me feel sad to think that the days of "I love you Mummy" cards might be over.

And so the Morning Dawned......

No cuddles, no one in my bed rushing to give me homemade presents, Nick and I carried on our usual morning chores and greeted the guests for the first feed run of the week. I have to hand it to them as it was bitterly cold and we have some very young little helpers this week but they made it right round all the animals. I sloped off to enjoy a run on my own as my Mother's Day treat to myself arriving back just in time to see them all finishing up at the rabbits.

Tractor rides from the car park and back to the rabitts

A Surprise Waiting

I came back into the garden with Nick to a wonderful selection of flowers from the farm and tulips from Clio (Thank you Brownies).

Mother's Day Flowers from the Farm

When I stepped inside my kitchen was spotless and a big fry up was well underway. Fruit and yogurt might have been healthier after my run, but hey, I have a house of boys and it is not their idea of a treat! My eldest was the leader in this military operation and I was quite overwhelmed, the only "clutter" on my kitchen Island was the site of cards from the children. I could have cried with happiness.

Mother's Day Cards and gifts

I have to admit after my run I was delighted to be tucking into bacon, sausage and eggs and steaming hot coffee. I must have been totally taken by surprise as I didn't think to grab the camera to show off their culinary skills before tucking in. They even washed up for me.

A laugh a minute

On a roll now with their Mother's Day surprises the younger children were in and out of the house all afternoon buzzing back and forth. More flowers arrived and then a note, how could I refuse?

Letter to Mummy

Nick and I both took our seats for the promised performance, I caught the amateur production on video and while I'm sure they are some way off a Punch and Judy performance to entertain the guests, it certainly tickled Nick and me. The unpolished nature of the performance and 3 restarts somehow added to the fun! Please don't expect to follow the plot, they assure me there was one but it's not easy to follow!

If you were wondering where my middle boys were, they were taking a very low profile following an all night 12 mile hike with Scouts which finished at the hut in sleeping bags the early hours of the morning. After being dropped home they spent the best part of Mother's Day skulking round with sunken red eyes and grunting at anyone who passed them! They did however appear to brighten up for dinner wolfing down my Gammon in Cider as if they hadn't seen food for a month!

For me it was a pretty perfect Mother's Day. I even gave into the pressure of watching Top Gear with them all snuggled up on the sofas, which was actually funnier than I had imagined. May be next year will the dreaded one where my children feel to big too bother with the little surprises? I do hope not.

 Mother's Day Evening

I have seen a few Mother's Day posts around so I am making this a blog hop to bring them together. Please grab this code if you would like to add the blog hop to your post, or alternatively just link up here.

Country Kids from Coombe Mill

by CoombeMill 23 February 2013 00:00

We have gone on Holiday!

Even living in a holiday environment we still like to take a break when we have the chance. This week we have left the farm in the capable hands of Farmer Ted and Farmer Kym to take our week away "on tour" in Sussex, London and Buckinghamshire catching up with family. It makes a change for Nick and I from daily farm life and ensures we return full of enthusiasm and new ideas for the farm. For the children it is a chance to enjoy town life, catching up with cousins and friends and having Mum and Dad to themselves for a week.

One thing is for certain, you can take Country Kids to the town but you can't quite take the country spirit out of them. Climbing is in their nature, and if there are no suitable trees, well the park climbing frame, the side of a building, a statue or a lamppost become substitutes!

Climbing Country Kids in Town

The scooters, bikes and skate boards Grandma has accumulated in her garage are always put to use from the moment the kids jump out of the car from the long journey. The close is a perfect scooting ground as is the town skate park. Sorry kids we are not building a skate park at Coombe Mill, it will have to stay a holiday treat!

Scooters and Skate Park

What no sand? Brighton beach has a Pier and pebbles, so different from the sand and surf in Cornwall yet perfect for a February Picnic. Of course it wasn't long before they were down at the water's edge playing dare against the waves. Needless to say the waves won and 6 soggy pairs of shoes and trouser bottoms trooped back towards the car.....

Beach Picnic and Fun with the Waves

but not before having a go in this one on Brighton Pier, if only to compare with ours!

Negotiating London by car and tube to visit family and friends has been stressful at times, counting the children on and off the tube my least favourite part, but it was all worth for it some great days out together.

Family and Friends

The only casualty of the week was Clio who managed to break her arm on the first day scooting too fast at the park. she was very brave and we only took her to hospital as a precaution not thinking it was broken! If you look closely you will see her sling in all the photos here.

The Christmas Tag

by CoombeMill 17 December 2012 20:25
I have been tagged by the lovely Jenny from Mummy Mishaps in a Christmas meme that I have seen travelling widely in the blogosphere, I may be the last to finally add my piece, but it is a fabulous list of questions so I am taking time out from working towards Christmas and enjoying all that it brings to sit down and record my thoughts.

Q1. What's your favourite thing about Christmas?

Catching some family outdoor time. I love the Christmas lights, visits to Santa, putting up our decorations and just being outdoors with the children in the run up to Christmas when they are so excited for all that is ahead.

Q2. What's your favourite makeup look for the festive season?

Couldn't be further from my thoughts, last year Christmas day was so full on I'm not sure I managed any makeup, which is probably just as well as it would have run in the sea anyway - yes we all went body boarding in the sea on Christmas day! The eldest two boys have new winter wet suits for Christmas so I hope to repeat our beach trip again this year!

Q3. Real or fake tree?

We have real trees in all our properties from the local nursery and one for us too. I love putting them up and decorating them with all the kids favourite treasures over the years. The finished result is far from designer but loved and homely and very Coombe Mill! I just love the smell of the pine, but pay for it when I am still trying to pick pine needles out of the carpets in spring!

Q4. Giving presents or receiving them?

It gives me such pleasure to see presents being opened; I am so looking forward to seeing the triplets' faces when they unwrap these their tablets this year and these amazing handmade cases made especially for them by the lovely Sarah at Silver Birch Crafts.

hand made tablet cases

Q5. Do you open your presents Christmas morning or evening?

With 8 of us and family staying each year presents become a morning, noon and night event! Father Christmas presents for the children in the morning, a few presents after lunch and the main haul of family presents in the evening round the tree after Christmas dinner when we have enjoyed the best of the outdoors for the day.

Christmas Morning stockings waitingMorning stocking openingFamily presents waiting for the evening!

Q6. Handmade Christmas cards or bought?
I find Christmas cards a real chore and write less and less each year, it strikes me as an awful waste of time and resources. I only send them to friends and family I don't see regularly and they are bought ones.  After about the 17th December I find I am falling over cards everywhere, though they do make very effective cheap decorations for the room when interspersed with homemade snowflakes which also gets them up and out of the way!

Q7. What's your favourite Christmas film?

,  and  all rave about Polar Express so I might have to watch this, I don't think I have stopped to watch a Christmas film since I was a child, back then it was always The Sound of Music or The towering Inferno which stick in my mind each Christmas on TV.

Q8. What's your favourite Christmas food?

Dates and Stilton, cracking nuts from their shells and a glass of port. Though if I am honest I love all the Christmas food and since I invented my wheat free, bit free Christmas cake recipe it is definitely up there as one of my favourite Christmas foods too.

So I now tag the following Christmas stars, it is a long list in the hope that I find someone who has not already completed this festive meme. If you have been tagged and already posted, please leave me a comment with your post so I can check out your Christmas fun too.

Venison in Red Wine

by CoombeMill 30 October 2012 11:52

A Winter Classic for a family supper or entertaining

I love this casserole on a chilly winter's evening. It has a hearty feel to it and fills the kitchen with delicious country cooking smells
thanks to the herbs and amply red wine! It can be made in advance which is perfect when you know you are going to be busy around dinner time or for entertaining when you want to heat a meal that tastes and looks amazing without the stress of having just that minute made it!

Venison in Red Wine

About Venison

You might need a good butcher to find venison. Ideally you want casserole joints like haunch, though if you are feeling extravagant the steaks will work beautifully and need a little less cooking time. Ask for it chopped into chunks if you can as I find the boning the hardest and longest part of the preparation. It is an incredibly lean meat with very little fat yet a rich red meat flavour that works with red wine like apple pie with custard! All quantities are very forgiving so don't be afraid to add your own twist to my recommendations.

Ingredients

Venison cut into large cube size pieces, I never remember to weigh things to write them down but I am guessing I work on about 2 to 2.5 lbs. This Fed 11 of us easily for dinner with a couple of portions over.

2 packs of good back baconVenison in Red wine ingredients

Garlic cloves crushed or chopped

3 large onions

Pack of mushrooms any variety will do

Cup of dried prunes with stones removed

2 tablespoons of redcurrant jelly

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

4 to 5 tablespoons of plain white flour

few sprigs of sage and rosemary. I have these in the garden, but supermarkets have fresh herbs or even dried herbs will do.

About half a bottle of red wine

4 beef oxo cubes

Tin of chopped tomatoes

Method

Brown the meat with the finely chopped herbs and a tablespoon of olive oil, it really does just need a dash

Browning the venison and herbs

While the meat is browning, fry the bacon and garlic till golden and sticking to the base.

Move the bacon to one side of the pan, add a spoonful of olive oil and fry the onions and mushrooms, gradually working in the bacon and sticky bits from the base of the pan till the onion and mushroom just begin to soften and colour. Remove from the heat.

Bacon, onions and muchrooms

Place the tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce pepper and crushed oxo cubes to a 1 pint measuring jug. Fill to the top with red wine.

When the meat is sealed turn the heat right down so as not to burn on the base of the pan. Sprinkle in the flour and stir gently on a low heat for 1 minute to coat each piece evenly.

Wine mix made & flour added to meat

Add the wine mix then the bacon mix and combine. Top up with red wine if it looks too thick.

Wine and onion mix combined ready for the oven

Place in a preheated oven at 170 for 1 hour.

Remove and stir in the prunes and redcurrant jelly. Top up with red wine if thickening too fast.

Add prunes and redcurrant jelly for final hour of cooking

Return to the oven and reduce the heat to 150 for a further hour.

We enjoyed ours with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, roasted vegetables and green vegetables for a family supper with friends.

Dinner with friends

When I make this recipe for my freezer meals for our guests I add carrots to the casserole and top with a layer of saute potato which then crisps up beautifully on defrosting and reheating whilst preventing the casserole drying out. It is a perfect dish to make in advance or freeze as the more cooking and resting you allow, the more the taste develops.

Things to do before I am 'older'

by CoombeMill 18 January 2012 10:00

Thank you for the Tag!

This meme comes to me from the very supportive  who encourages me with my blog and has a lovely blog of her own going about life with her beautiful Boy. The meme originated from Danielle at   with this post ; another parenting site well worth following.

Things to do before I am ........

Our Family

The photos show the Kids 6 years ago and all of us now. In 6 years time when I hit 50, (there we are said it now!) I think many things will be changing again for us as a family. Our children will be age 13 to 19 and many of my achievements and wishes are based on the changes that will bring.

So here goes for the list of things I hope to achieve.

1

Go away for a weekend with Nick and leave the Children in charge of themselves and the farm

2

Go out for dinner and have one of the boys come and collect me in the car

3

Have regained 1 bedroom in the house and hopefully packed 1 child happily off to Uni

4

Have found a big enough dining table to accommodate meal times with the girlfriends and boyfriend too!

5

Have built another 2 Scandinavian lodges at Coombe Mill

6

Add a really significant "something" extra that all our guests will benefit from

7

Still be able to cycle up our hill

8

To stay young at heart and still enjoy sporty things with the (grown up)kids - surfing, skating, cycling etc

9

To fight the onset of grey hair with the best colorants on the market!

10

Maintain the respect of my children, when I am the shortest member of the family!

11

Find enough time to keep enjoying my blogging

12

Play golf with Nick more than twice a year

13

Organise a big party for my 50th and practice with a mini party for my 45th

14

keep a bathroom for myself in a house full of teenagers

15

Win a competition for a year's supply of Lynx for the boys

16

Train myself to go to bed before midnight

17

Be able to go to sleep at night and not wait up for the kids to stumble in from where ever

18

Be making a smooth transition from parent protector to parent support and friend

19

Make sure I never find teenage dirty dinner plates or half drunk drinks in teenage bedrooms

20

Hope that I have done enough as a guiding parent to ensure I am not a Grandmother by 50!

I am now tagging the following people to write a list of things to do before they hit their next decade. They then need to copy the url of their post back into the linky tool on Two Point Four Children's post.

I am looking forward to reading your lists.
