Creating with Nature

Last weekend I ended up with a rare chance to spend some time on the farm alone with my daughter. The older boys were helping Dad with the train track, the middle one had a friend over and were playing out on the farm while the younger 2 were at a football match leaving Clio and I with time together.  We decided to do something girly that the boys wouldn't enjoy. I remembered as a child spending hours collecting flowers and mashing them down to try and make perfume. Clio thought this was something she would enjoy too so armed with washed jam jars we set off collecting on the farm.

Collecting flowers on the farm to make perfume

Surprised to find buttercups we had to hold them under our chin's to see if we both liked butter. Do you remember doing that one as a child? It was a definite yes for us both!

Having filled our jars with daffodils, primula, daisies, camellia, buttercups, snowdrops and some rosemary and sage from the green house we set to work.

Flower collection from the farm

I brought out a jug of water, chopping board and knife and some food colour. Clio separated the petals while I chopped then she had a go with the chopping, a good time to remind her how to hold a knife and which way to chop just the same as if it were vegetables in the house.

Then for the fun part: smelling the flowers and deciding which to mix together to make our perfume. Clio was in charge here organizing them into the jars. We added water from the jug and a drop of food colour for effect.

Making Perfume

Clio took some sticky labels from the office and created names for her perfumes and graded them on smell and appearance out of 10.

A few days later we went to check how they were developing. We found that the mixed varieties were not so pleasant but the camellia on its own, which Clio had named "Red Joy", was really rather good. This was taken up to her bedroom. Now we are looking forward to the bright summer flowers to have another go.

Making Fire Down on the Farm

"I'm lighting a bonfire anyone going to help me?" Daddy booms and is rewarded by a stampede of little feet rushing to find their wellies! Whether it is the danger, the heat, playing with nature or time with us I'm not sure, but my children love to make camp fires or join their Dad for a really big bonfire. The first one of 2013 is always memorable as all the Christmas trees go up in smoke. Add to this paper rubbish and fallen branches and we are set for an afternoon of fun. The other children on holiday with us were only too glad to come and lend a hand; "Farmer Nick's little helpers club" goes further than just the animals!

Bonfire Fun at the Farm

Some adventures are best shown on video and this is one of them.  All their antics caught on film while they were busy working playing including Nick's surprise for them all at the end. Their faces are a picture!

Surf Club at Polzeath Beach

Every Tuesday from Easter to October we hit the beach after school. Come rain or shine the children adore the beach and are growing in their surfing abilities too! They are members of Boardriders which is a special club for Cornish kids run after school by the lovely Surf's Up team at Polzeath beach. The older 2 children have now progressed to the "Elite Squad" while the younger ones have moved from "Beginners" to "Improvers" this year.

After a scramble to pull on wet suits they are off to find their friends and collect their boards

Surf Boards at the ready on Polzeath beach

1st stop is a refresher session on the beach. Here they gain all the top tips from the instructors on style and technique. They also learn about water safely, rip currents and looking after the boards.

Then it is into the water for over an hour of fun and surf! They all have so much energy and surfing is a great way to use it up! I usually body board alongside them, but sometimes I will grab a long board and surf with them, or try anyway, I spend most the time falling in and pulling myself up afterwards. The children make it look so effortless and can't understand why I find it hard but I still love trying and being in the sea with them.

Enjoying the Sea

For anyone staying on holiday with us at Coombe Mill, I can thouroughly recomend  lessons through Surf's Up. Children from age 7 plus can try with  a one to one lesson, group lesson or a series for the week. Money well spent for the adventurous.

An amazing week.

The sun shone from dawn to dusk, how could anyone resisit having fun outdoors? Our children have played out till late with friends at the farm and we have seized every opportunity for a trip to Polzeath beach. The waves were perfect for body boarding so we took full advantage. With rock pools, rocks to climb, acres of golden sand, good parking and facilities it is a great family beach. Despite the gorgeous weather the beach remained largely deserted. I love the feel of the sand and sea salt against my body and the joy of the children laughing and playing. Weeks like this remind me just how beautiful Cornwall is and how lucky I am.

I love this video clip of Jed in the rock pool for the sheer excitement busting from his whole demeanour

An impromptu BBQ was just a delightful way to round off a hard day at the beach. My chance to pass the cooking baton to Nick, for the children to catch up with friends and the grown-ups chill out with Pimm's and marvel on the wonders of the British weather!

Just for the record, Guy has not cut himself in this photo, just an overload on the tomato ketchup!

I can only imagine you have all had a wonderful week too and look forward to seeing your pictures. Please grab the badge and link up your outdoor fun below

Farm Fun Saturday

Another glorious week for weather, cold but so beautiful. All our muddy puddles have turned to ice rinks providing a different form of outdoor fun for the children. Climbing the trees has taken their fancy this week too, I think it was after Felix showed his famous Eden project Trick a couple of weeks back! http://www.coombemill.com/blog/post/2012/01/22/Silent-Sunday.aspx. So here are the gang enjoying the winter sunshine on the farm and just letting off steam being kids
