Country Kids from Coombe Mill

Adventure at Lundy Bay

Last week the children had a bakers day for the Royal Cornwall Show. We love all the local farming shows but the Royal Cornwall is so large I just know I would lose one of the little ones, so Nick and I enjoyed  the show alone on the Thursday while the children were at school, then used the Baker's Day for a beach trip. I thought it was time for a change from our favourite at Polzeath, so we parked at the National Trust Car park for Lundy Bay and took the mile long stretch of coast path through woodland and farmland down to the Bay.

Walking to Lundy Bay

Popping out from the woods is the most spectacular bay with towering cliffs and caves. I cursed having forgotten my camera at the last minute and having to make do with my Blackberry. Thank goodness for a clear sunny day or the photos would be unusable! We made our way down the well trodden paths to the beach and across the rocks.

Lundy Bay from the Cliff top

At low tide there is the most glorious sandy beach while at high tide the sea comes right up to the cliffs. This daily tidal movement allows for oodles of rock pools and plenty of sea life growing on the rocks. We were the only ones there and felt like The Famous Five on an adventure at Smugglers Cove as we clambered over the rocky outcrops from one sandy inlet to the next.

Climbing the rocks at Lundy Bay

The kids stumbled upon a giant plunge pool and coaxed me down to join them. There wasn't a second thought as they all stripped off and took it in turns to jump in from the highest rock ledge inside the cave, squealing with simultaneous delight and cold as they hit the water.

Plunge Pool At Lundy Bay

Already thoroughly soaked but happy I watched all six stride out into the sea together as best of friends. A proud Mummy Moment!

Sea Fun at Lundy Bay

On the way back we checked out the National Trust signs for directions and what to look out for on our walk, however it didn't include the enormous Adder Felix spotted right in the middle of the path! We all gingerly walked up the back and round, oh for a good lens and not my blackberry phone! I felt I was dicing with death to capture this one!

We will all be watching where we walk next time! The children are already asking me when we can go back which I always take as a sign of a good day.

Joining in with Country Kids

For anyone new joining in, Country Kids is about leaving the sofa, the tablets and TV and enjoying the outdoors in any way you like, apart from playing games on an i-pad sitting under a tree! Playing in the park, the garden, the beach or the woods or even an urban adventure is fine. Outdoor cooking, crafting or learning are all encouraged. Go wild but go outdoors. If you are looking for a little inspiration these are just a few of the posts I loved last week.  Sit Still Monkeys enjoyed a family day out to a very English town; it helps to have cool grandparents with a boat there too!  Kids in the Garden were far from the garden camping in the Scottish Mountains while it was all the fun of the circus with lovely colourful photos from A Party of Seven.

My Mad MADs Weekend!

by CoombeMill 2 October 2012 08:20

It all started with an invite to the MAD Blog awardsMad Blog Awards Finalist Coombe Mill

Back in the Summer I was thrilled to discover that I was a finalist in the Family Fun and Small Business Categories for the Mums and Dads Blog Awards held in London. I was determined to attend the event and at the time it seemed like a great idea to make a family weekend trip to the 'Big Smoke'. As the time drew near I had my reservations. Planning all the business cover for our absence was tough and there is no getting away from the fact it is a long drag for the children from Cornwall to London. However with cousins desperate to meet up and family in Fulham and the East End it felt like a great idea to combine a visit with the awards.

The Awards Evening

The expert planning and preparation from Sally Whittle with help from  and  was faultless, or at least that's how it came across to me from emails before hand to sponsored outfits and even hair and make-up on the day if you chose, I felt like a show biz girl in the run up to the evening! Thank you ladies for making me feel special.

All dolled up I grabbed a quick photo with the family, before setting off full of nervous excitement in taxi "Farmer Nick" for The Radisson Edwardian in Bloomsbury Street. Nick had the Sat. Nav. programmed and three quarters of an hour to spare for the 5 mile journey from Fulham; what could go wrong? I had my lovely French Connection gold dress, Glamorous Ravel shoes and silk Ted Baker bag all courtesy of Littlewoods and felt a million dollars. Incidentally I have never before bought clothes on line, but found Littlewoods to have an amazing range and their delivery service first class.

Things didn't quite go to plan

We are Country bumpkins and despite living and working near London years ago had quite forgotten just how bad the traffic can be!

London Traffic JamScotch House, London sign,

After about 20 minutes we were half a mile away and all seamed manageable, however after another half an hour we were totally lost, had completed 3 very slow laps of Piccadilly Circus and the Tom Tom was virtually thrown out of the window having clearly lost the plot, or Bloomsbury Street at least! Finally with nothing else for it at 7.20pm I clambered out of our bus in my beautiful but not sensible high heels into the throbbing bustle of central London and looked frantically around for a black cab while Farmer Nick disappeared off into the distance to try and find his way back to his sister in Fulham. At that moment I felt so silly and so alone it was all I could do not to cry. It took me another 10 minutes to find a black cab that would stop for me, only to be told he had just come from Bloomsbury, that the traffic was hideous (well I knew that bit) and he wasn't prepared to go back! I could have hugged the cabby who finally agreed to take me, it felt like an age, but we were in fact no more than 10 minutes away!

Back on track

I passed  with some official forms and knew I was in the right place. The first person to catch my eye was Annie from , well she would be hard not to recognize! Everyone hugged me warmly when I introduced myself and me them, my 'almost' tears of frustration were now 'almost' tears of joy and relief! I had missed all the reception but at least made it in time to sit down for dinner and hopped up at every opportunity to meet and chat to fellow bloggers I had missed at the introductory drinks.

My table

As well as some lovely bloggers, all of whom I knew virtually, my table had a surprise for me. Across the table from back here in our little Cornish village sat our neighbour's daughter! I don't know who was more surprised, I knew she was pursuing a successful marketing career in London but had no idea she was working for the MADs Awards sponsor Parentdish; it really is a small world!

The wine flowed, the meal was delicious and before I knew it we were into the awards.

The Awards

I now have an inkling how the big celebrities feel at prestigious television and film awards, thank you MADs for creating that sensation for us too. It was wonderful having the categories and nominees read out and cheering all the finalists and winners. The shine, sparkle and glitter from the dresses knew no bounds, I may have felt silly stranded in Piccadilly but I felt right at home by now! Every winner looked so totally delighted and overcome I grinned with them all,  had an inspired recording for us from her daughter for her winning speech while  and Multiple Daddy brought a tear to every eye as they collected the well deserved award for Science Sparks, and Kerry's win for Family Fun, I surprised myself how truly happy I was for her even though it meant I hadn't won.

My Turn did come....

I had that "Oh my God it's me" heart flipping moment when my name was read out as winner for the Small Business Blog Award, I just remember wondering if I would pass out, my heart was pounding that fast as I thrust my camera at the lovely Becky from Baby Budgeting for a photo or two and wobbled through my wine head and my oh so beautiful high heels up to the stage. I hadn't prepared anything, thinking that would be unlucky and conceded and suddenly regretted it as babbled on about goodness knows what and needing the loo! I just remember falling into the arms of  afterwards so happy! Thank you a million to everyone who spared me a vote, I believe it was very tight with the other great bloggers in the category, so every vote really did count. You all made my weekend for me. Thank you , , Mummy Whisperer and Kiddy Charts for the stiff competition, it could have been any one of us up there and of course thank you to Anywhere Working who sponsored the category.

Mad Blog Awards: Time to have some fun

With an amazing goody bag in my hand I made for a taxi home around one am. Thankfully it was an uneventful journey and nothing like the route we came in. I tip toed Goodie Baginto the house expecting to find everyone asleep, but Clio was still awake and gave me a welcome warm hug as she excitedly inspected my award and rummaged through the goody bag. Poor Nick had to be woken up to hear of my evening whether he liked it or not!

I spent the rest of the weekend in a mad dash around London with the children and Nick; the highlight being seeing my sister in the Tate Modern, where she is working as a live piece of art. None of us understood the first thing but it was a great experience and so totally different to life on the farm in Cornwall!

We were all exhausted by Sunday night with travelling, visiting and late nights but on balance it was the right decision to go as a family, catch up with our London relatives and remind the children there is a whole big wide world beyond our farm; thank you MADs for creating the occasion.

Finding Time

by CoombeMill 19 June 2012 11:40

A little introduction.

I've been double tagged in this meme by two great twitter friends: The Lovely  who blogs at Cakes Photos Life and very capable  with her new blog http://twoofeverythingtwintales.blogspot.co.uk/.  Both these friendly ladies have lovely blogs developing which I would recommend to follow.  The Meme was started by Sex, Drugs, Rocker and... Stroller and now it's my turn!

Please post the rules.

When answering the questions, please give as much detail as possible!

How and when do you find the time to...

....do your laundry?
This is a story of two halves. For the business I am super critical and our laundry company know everything has to be spotless, ironed, crisp and white. For the family washing quite the opposite! Things get muddy enough without making washing here on the farm so it is no more than an outfit a day unless they get soaking from a water fight or playing in the river. Having said that just for the essentials for a family of 8 and a few of the business items I have a super size top loading washing machine and 2 tumble driers!
My PC in the office

....write a blog post?
My blog posts are rarely started and finished in one go. Typically I think them out in my head over a morning run and jot down the headings when I return. I will then return to my notes around 11pm when the family are all in bed. It is then the following morning when I proof read and post. That does sound a bit of a performance, but I don't trust my spelling and grammar enough to just write and publish!

....look after yourself...i.e. wash your hair, paint your nails, take a bubble bath etc?
I am a low maintenance kind of girl. Me time is typically a run or a cycle with beauty restricted to a shower and hair wash. I never style my hair in any way but just leave it to dry naturally. Occasionally I will paint my nails just before I fall asleep in the early hours, but invariably curse my decision in the morning when I see spots on the duvet and smudges on my nails!

 My cycling time out

....spend time with your other half?

I am quite good at this one. We both work here on the farm and so meet up every lunch and dinner. We eat out twice a week too, thanks to children who no longer need a babysitter. The real treat to ourselves is a twice a year to our Honeymoon hotel in Devon for 2 nights. Bliss!

....do fun stuff with your Little Ones?

All the time. We gave up the corporate jobs 10 years ago to run Coombe Mill. The children were the main incentive for doing this. We are here on the farm for them all the time, they help us with our work and we all take time out together as a family. Our holiday farm has turned into exactly the lifestyle I dreamed of for our children. Running my Country Kids linky gives me the opportunity to share our family outdoor time and be inspired by ideas from other bloggers.

At the beach with the kidsOn the Farm togetherFamily Day trip to Lappa Valley

....spend time with family?
This one is harder, all the extended family from Grandparents to cousins live in the South East. Visits are only about twice a year but very precious when they happen.

At the GrandparentsCousins visiting at Coombe MillThe wider Cambouropoulos Family at Greek Easter

....socialise with friends?
Oh now I do enjoy keeping up with friends from bodying boarding mornings together to hosting parties and accepting all invites coming my way. I love a good get together and take every opportunity. I girls night away is also something I indulge in a couple of times a year, worth every minute to me.

Body boarding with the girlsGarden Party at Coombe Mill with friends and holiday makersBonfire Party at Coombemill

....prepare an evening meal juggling a baby/toddler bedtime routine?

Whenever possible, we all eat together as a family. This is much easier now the children are growing up and don't need to eat so early, also their tastes have matured so we all enjoy the same meals. There still remains nights of juggling 4 or more clubs between us for the children and meal times are then in shifts. I do have some after school help with the children or I would never be able to allow the children to do all their activities, cook dinner, help with the homework and deal with the business. Dropping dishing up a meal to take a booking is a common event, but the family have grown up with this and all muck into help.

Family Meal Time
....deep clean your house?
I am a Jackal and Hide character here! The rented properties have to be spotless but my standards are so different in our own home. For me the kitchen and bathrooms are the essentials but the rest is a hoover and flick of the duster!

....do the food shopping?
If it were down to me it would all be on line, however Nick really enjoys the food shop so I leave him with a list each week. The quantities and cost appear to grow by the week with the children!

....bulk ironing?

Ironing is a rude word in my house. The business linen is a must in serious volume, but most of this I contract out. The iron rarely sees the light of day for us personally, there again the animals don't seam to mind!

Family Time at the Camelford Show

by Coombe Mill 10 August 2011 22:02
The sun shone all day for one of our favourite family days out. There is so much to occupy the children that it's always a winner for us. Today it clashed with our return from Sussex, after a lovely week with Farmer's Nick's Mum, but not to be beaten we set off at 4am to ensure we were back in time to check all was well at Coombe Mill and head on out to the show!

Striding out to the action

Many of our guests this week are regulars and know it makes a great family day while others saw my daily update on the wi fi and followed the recommendation.

This lovely family remind me so much of us a few years ago, they have 5 boys under 6 yrs old with twins for number 4 and 5!

So takes me back!

The children headed straight for the big tent and all the free circus equipment where they met up with our guests and local friends. I think they must have spent nearly the whole day here riding penny fathings, juggling, plate spinning, tight rope walking and much more!

Watch out Clio you are about to fall!

Happy faces all round!

Generally we bring a picnic on all our family days out. Eating out with 8 of us is an expensive exercise, more than the £25 entrance fee for the 8 of us!

Lunch with friends
(You can read more on my picnic tips on multiplemummy's site where I guest blogged on the subject last week)

http://multiplemummy.com/blog/picnics-a-favourite-with-the-kids/

Today I am fraid I broke my own rule! After arriving home this morning to an empty kitchen we did splash out on a very unhealthy pasty and chips combo to keep us going for the day. It will definitely be back to the picnic's next time (pocket hurting)!

At 2pm the big tent fills to overflowing with children for a comedy act of magic tricks and circus stunts. Guaranteed to make them laugh every year and a great way to keep them occupied at any age for hour or so!

I have compiled all the highlights into a fun video of the day. Well worth a watch!
