Halloween at Coombe Mill

Wednesday was our annual Halloween evening. Normally this falls the week after half term and we have just a dozen or so little helpers on the farm for some organized Trick or Treating. This year, with so many children and the added benefit of two empty cottages which are due to be turned into a super new Family cottage for 2014, it felt like the perfect timing for some added party games. What better a location for a haunted house! No electric, nothing to be precious about just an empty carcass to have some fun and as it turned out shelter everyone from the rain! Semi outdoors but I think a shell of a building in outdoor gear still counts.

Derelict Cottage Turned Haunted House

An afternoon of preparation and the house is ready to party:

Halloween Party Preparation

Let the Party Begin

With games like splat the rat, Ghostly pinata, apple bobbing, go wild and paint the walls, and musical statues the younger children were entertained without being scared, while in the 2nd bedroom we had the scary coffin of a dissected body and a cackling Witch encouraging you to delve into the coffin and feel the body parts, strictly for the older children and adults!

Halloween Party fun for all the family

Trick or Treat.

We have an organised Trick or Treating procession at Coombe Mill. Every participating house has a Pumpkin outside and then we know they are ready for our visit. Reconvening at reception after our party games the children were armed with their collecting bags and fired up for more fun despite the rain. I led an orderly procession along with the parents from property to property; well as orderly as can be expected with around 25 super excited children! It rained and it poured but I don't think anyone really minded. We even had our very own Coombe Mill Ghost peeping out from windows and behind cottages to the wonder of the children.

Spooky quest for sweets!

A huge effort had been made to decorate houses and prepare for the treat onslaught, my thanks to all the parents for helping make it a memorable evening with an amazing haul for each child to take home.

Halloween delights

A whole heap of Halloween fun for everyone all wrapped up on one spooky film:

I think Halloween and half term are likely to coincide next year too, if you fancy joining our Halloween fun and games and enjoying a family week of outdoor fun on the farm be sure to get in touch.

Happy Birthday Country Kids!

Country Kids is one this week. When I began a year ago, still in my first year as a blogger, it was beyond my wildest dreams so see so many enjoying posting about their outdoor fun and supporting the whole ethos of outdoor family time, fresh air and rosy cheeks. One year on and I am loving hosting the linky, struggling to choose just one of your posts a month for my Country Kids sun hat, and delighting in reading and learning from what others are doing. Our Happy Birthday mud pie cake was inspired by Laura from The Life and Times of the Working Mum. The light was fading as the triplets rushed to change from school and help with our special cake.

Making a Celebration Mud Pie Cake

The messy bit!

We set off to the river for some squelchy mud armed with spades, hands, a large glass bowl as a mold and a tray. I love this bit, soggy trousers, filthy wellies and mud everywhere but truly happy Country Kids!

Thinking Pretty

We carefully placed the tray on top of the bowl and turned the whole thing over to release a perfectly formed mud cake. The children then delighted in running off round the gardens and meadows and farm hedgerows collecting all the pretty coloured leaves and flowers to decorate their perfectly formed mud pie cake.  I do love some of the photos here, I think it is the boys looking angelic with flowers after being caked in mud just a few minutes earlier!

The Creative Part

It was a team effort to decorate our cake with all their beautiful findings. We discovered this is such a fantastic time of year for rich vibrant colours. They left a space in the centre to light a tea candle just like a proper birthday cake. The children were so proud of the finished result and rightly so. I was even more proud of the way they supported one another and marvelled over each other's decorations, rather than squabbling over details and who did the most. I did allow them each a turn at lighting the candle or that would have been sure to have caused ructions!

A round of singing 'Happy Birthday' was then in order, some of our guests came to see what we were celebrating and joined in with the singing too, as they had been following Country Kids on the blog news before coming on holiday.

Joining In

I am delighted to be carrying on into year two with Country Kids and hope you will join me in grabbing the badge and linking up your outdoor family fun. Anywhere from the Country to the City is fine, so long as it involves some fresh air and rosy cheeks. Please try and take a look at a few others here as there are always some great ideas and leave them a comment too.

A Mum and Daughter Afternoon

We are finally reaching that time of the year where our busy changeover Saturdays are slowing down. This week I was able to take advantage of a couple of hours in the sunshine with Clio between checking our freshly cleaned properties and welcoming in our newly arriving guests. Heading out onto the farm with a stale loaf of bread we were warmly welcomed by all the animals.

Clio on the farm

Wondering back up the garden path we decided on a quick check of our over grown and somewhat abandoned green house. Despite a huge burst of enthusiasm when we planted it back in the spring, we have been very remiss with our subsequent tending and I really didn't hold out much hope of discovering anything edible between the weeds. Clio's squeal of delighted when she as she foraged through the greenhouse told me I might just be wrong. Indeed so wrong I had to back track to the house to find a container for our haul! Tomatoes, cucumber and perfect little red chillies were just perfect for picking and the herbs were all thriving too!

Green house pickings

Encouraged by our findings here we checked the vegetable crop we thought we lost round the back of the green house, the sweetcorn and carrots were nowhere to be seen but beetroot must be more hardy and had survived just fine.

Beetroot uncovered

Back in the house we added the splitting tomatoes and red chillies to the chilli I had left simmering for supper and used the rest to make a salad together. Boiling the beetroot we made a simple beetroot salad too. By the time Nick and the boys returned with the grocery shopping Clio and I were able to pronounce supper already well in hand and just 3 properties left to check in.

Far away from the farm

We have been in Lanzarote all week with our younger four children while the older ones, together with Farmer Ted, have looked after the farm and our holiday guests for us. Arriving home to green and drizzle last night I couldn't have been happier, I just wanted to take endless photos of the farm today it looks so beautiful after the sun scorched rock of Lanzarote. Having said that we had a wonderful time together and as we were on an all inclusive safe resort, the kids had the freedom they are so accustomed to here on the farm, just totally different activities, which was perfect. It was of course an outdoor based holiday and here are a few of our highlights for Country Kids.

Round the Pool:

Around the swimming pool

Guy gets his imagination running with pool side inflatables:

We discovered an outdoor Gym along the sea front which even Farmer Nick had to try!

 Outdoor Gym

On the beach with some beach burying, family volleyball and splashing in the sea, no need for wet suits here!

The Beach and Sea

Down at the local market I found my self acting as a model for a wrap dress that Nick claimed looked like a dish cloth which was enough to ensure I didn't buy one! We were all captivated by the amazing human statues along the way and Nick had serious boat envy!

Market Day Fun

A captivated audience with my kids:

Without doubt the highlight of the holiday was our boat trip, inspired by Nick's yearning from watching them all moored up! A lovely looking million pound plus boat was offering 2 hour trips with snorkelling and fishing. We booked up and sailed off with two delightful members of crew and turned out to have the boat all to ourselves. A wonderful way to spend an afternoon, thankfully not one we can afford to indulge in very often as did discover I lack good sea legs and was glad of a pool day to regain my equilibrium before the long journey back to Cornwall.

Boating Fun

There is plenty to catch up on here on the farm and I am refreshed and ready to go. Holidays are definitely great for ensuring time out from work and time spent with the family.

Joining In

One on One time with Children

In a family with 6 children one on one time is a rare commodity, however when the opportunity arises Farmer Nick and I both take full advantage. It may be helping Daddy on the farm with the animals, baking with me in the kitchen or even something as simple as the grocery shop. The activity is less important than the time we spend together.

Potato Table Decorations

After a wet day this week the sun came out late afternoon, Jed and Theo were helping Daddy with some animal fencing, Clio was at Brownies and the older two upstairs doing homework. That left Guy who I diverted from the television and challenged to make us a table decoration for dinner. This was something I remember doing as a child and my memory was jogged by seeing other Autumn outdoor crafts over recent weeks on Country Kids, like Rainy Day Mum, Pink Oddy and Green Finger Kids. Guy eagerly took the challenge and we set off together round the farm with an empty ice cream tub and a pair of secateurs to find interesting plants for our centre piece.

Collecting plant and flower stems on the farm

Returning to the garden table I showed Guy how to stab the potato with a skewer to make a hole, then add his chosen trimmed stems. He was quite absorbed whilst I clicked away with the camera.

Making a Potato Table Center Piece

Once finished he proudly carried it to the table and it did make a lovely centre piece for dinner! I rather fancy attempting a Christmas version with holly and a little gold paint.

Clio was beside her shelf when she came home from Brownies having missed out on the fun. Needless to say I used the other half of the pototo with her the following day!

Country Kids Hat for September

This month hat goes to Chelsea Mamma for her post on the Bournmouth Festival. I could just picture my boys there loving every minute.
