Country Kids from Coombe Mill

The Toughest kids around?

Last week we were lucky enough to be invited round to a friend of a friend's house as they had their Grandchildren staying who they thought would love to meet our children. Their grounds were an idyllic mix of gardens, free range chickens and a lake over which they had rigged up a zip wire and were keen for us to try it with them. Home from home for our gang but with a zip wire that left Coombe Mill looking somewhat tame!

Children being children they all gelled in minutes united over the task of finishing the zip wire with the able help of the ever talented Farmer Nick for the more technical elements. Once ready they queued up over and over for turns while Nick and I were left endlessly pulling the rope back across each time.

Zip Wire Fun over the Lake

Thrills of the zip wire now over, mine were keen to take things on a stage and dared each other to drop off the wire into the lake half way. I know my kids with a dare and agreed that if they had to be so mad in February they could at least strip to their pants, assuming the cold might make them think twice. Not a problem, like good boy scouts they had already anticipated this reaction from me and rummaged in their rucksack for the swimming trunks they had thought to pack! Of course not to be left out the friends joined in too. Only Clio was left out with her broken arm, and my eldest boys who are reaching the age of wising up to the certain pain from the cold on hitting the lake which to them would outweigh the thrill of the jump!

Needless to say I couldn't let the kids have all the fun. Notice I still had all my clothes including my coat; it really was cold despite what my children would have you believe!

We are now inundated with requests from the children to have a zip wire across our river. I think our holiday insurance company would have a heart attack but I was inspired by this teddy zip wire idea from the National Trust with Kara at Chelsea Mamma in last week's Country Kids, there might be something my children could work on there!
