The past few weeks has seen Coombe Mill closed for winter maintenance and family downtime. We took full advantage with some lovely days out and lie ins over our weekends but it soon passes and the last 2 weeks have seen us all hands on deck as a family preparing for our Christmas opening. We are almost full for this Christmas which makes a fun and festive atmosphere for all who stay. The children have plenty of play mates, the parents have a chance to catch up with other parents on the morning animal feed run and evening train rides and to this we add our extra Christmas fun.
By the time the guests began to arrive last Thursday the farm was looking its festive best and I can honestly say it was a full family team effort to get there.
Farmer Nick and Ally had to finish off setting in the cattle grids and make good the road to the Scandinavian lodges again.
The indoor play area has been completely refitted during this close down, there were plenty of problems on this one but it was finally open just in time for little feet to play. Watch out for a full post to follow on this one.
The top of Pencarrow Scandinavian Lodge is where we house all our Christmas Trees and decorations, it was a 2 day job to bring everything down and check lights, tree decorations and assemble trees for every property. With so many quirky differences in the cottages and lodges including different ceiling heights we found ourselves moving trees from house to house to correctly locate them, we will be labelling them for next year to save all leg work and changes this year! Every family arrives to a tree with lights on and a box of decorations ready to make their own family decorating time.
Ladders and a steady hand are required for the outdoor decorations; we swapped a few locations this year and added some new pieces which are a lovely welcoming sight. Again there were unseen issues to overcome, the electric to the log store had been severed by the builders working on the play barn roof so Nick lost a vital day purchasing and rewiring here, however the finished result was worth the effort.
Our Santa train has become a highlight of Christmas at Coombe Mill and I’m delighted to say it is at its festive best. The children are already enjoying the Christmas cheer in the tunnel and looking forward to Santa taking his seat at the back on Christmas Eve.
Finally this is the first year we have had the craft tent for Christmas and after a successful Halloween Make over it has been given a Christmas one too. Our Christmas crafts will take place in here as well as our Christmas Eve festive drinks.
With the work now done we are looking forward to enjoying Christmas and New Year as a family and sharing our festive farm and Christmas activities with all our holiday guests. We even have some baby rabbits ready to hold!
Wishing you and your families a very Merry Christmas wherever you are spending it.
