I think by now every house must know the name of Stick Man, the lovable character book created by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. He has been embraced by the Forestry Commission where you can find trails to find the characters from the story and activity packs to purchase. Simple things like this bring nature and fantasy together for children and help create family adventures in the countryside. If you’ve yet to try the Stick Man Trails check out the nearest one to you on the forestry Commission website. Our local woods at Cardinham are supporting the trail and it is under half an hour if you are holidaying with us. They have a lovely cafe and wooded play area there too after all that walking.
Here at Coombe Mill the farm is perfect stick man territory. With our own Den building zone and twigs all over our forested footpaths it is easy to recreate your own stick man adventures here on our farm. Have a go at building your own stick man, just ask Farmer Nick for a little of his baler twine and you’ll be creating a whole family in no time! Try making stick arrow trails to follow and hiding your stick man at the end for a fun family afternoon on the farm. The Forestry Commission even have a competition asking people to make a stick super hero and share pictures on their Facebook wall to win a Stick Man goody bag worth £50.
After a day of playing on the farm what better than to relax back in one of our lodges or cottages, light the wood burner and watch Stick Man on DVD? On Christmas Day the BBC showed the first ever Stick Man Movie based on the book. It was an instant hit and the half hour animated film has now been turned into a DVD now available to buy from the Gruffalo shop. We are proud to have a have a copy for our guests here in our borrow room at Coombe Mill.
The story features a happy go lucky stick father’s incredible journey to make it home in time for Christmas.
