It has become an Easter tradition here at Coombe Mill to have a Spring raft race during the Easter Holidays. This is a great activity to bring together children of different age groups as we tend to have over the Easter break. From teens to tots everyone can get involved and the enthusiasm and competitive spirit it generates is infectious.
A Test Raft
We began by making our rafts. I always like to remake an example raft and check it floats before, then hand materials and tips out to everyone else at Activity Hour.
There followed a hive of activity and creative thinking as milk bottles, sticks and plastic cartons are lashed together with string and masking tape. Flowers, petals and ferns gave each unique design their own recognisable finish.
When everyone has finished crafting, we headed upstream to the Coombe Mill footbridge. The excitement was already building and it was all I could do to contain the older ones who had ran on ahead eager to start. When everyone had caught up I managed a quick photo on the footbridge steps.
Let the Raft Race Begin
Then it was time to line up over the edge of the bridge, we have had a few false starts in previous years but I think my ‘shouty’ voice must be improving as everyone held their raft tight and waiting for the grand countdown before letting go.
The above clip is thanks to the Go Pro strapped to the front of my raft; however the drop managed to quickly send it upside down so most of the rest of the recording is of the bottom of the river bed! There are a few fun clips in the video at the end.
The children raced along the riverbank cheering on their rafts while some of the older ones waded after them through the river with Guy freeing any that became stuck on rocks at the water’s edge. The wifi is patchy along the river so the quality isn’t great from the periscope recording but you can hear the shrieks of excitement.
The river was running quite fast this year and it was a struggle to beat the rafts to the finish line. Everyone crowded on the bridge to cheer them through while our brave water boys worked swiftly to collect the rafts as they came under the bridge.
The rafts were somewhat bedraggled after the river had played with them but there were still a few children taking their ones home as a memento of their day at the raft race.
I think holding a raft race is a tradition that will live on for a few years yet or at least for as long as I can persuade Guy to brave the water for me and save our rafts from sailing out to sea at Padstow!
