 Summer days

I hope you have had a good week and managed to dodge the showers. We have been away with our older boys for a few days leaving Farmer Amber in charge of the farm and younger kids. We made the most of the outdoors despite the rain and chillier temperatures and returned just in time to take all the family to the Royal Cornwall Show which is something we all enjoy. I hope to hear about your latest outdoor adventures on the link up below.

    • Despite the title, both countryside and urban outdoor adventures are welcome.
    • Unheated covered areas like a barn or tent count as outdoors.
  •  Please comment on my host post and a minimum of 3 others of your choice.
    • If you use #CountryKids when commenting the post owner will know where your found them and hopefully come back to visit your post.
  • Please take my badge, without it you won’t be considered for winning the lovely Rockfish Wellies.
  • Linked posts should be written and made live within the last 2 months.
    • I understand sometimes you need to do catch up posts and write about something from a couple of months ago but the publish date should be within 2 months.
  • By joining in with Country Kids you’re giving me permission to email you weekly as a reminder.

Life Underwater Studies for Preschool Kids

Posted on June 9th, 2017 - Fiona

I feel like we have been so lucky this year with plenty of dry weather and if you follow my Country Kids posts you could be forgiven for thinking the sun always shines on Coombe Mill. However sadly this isn’t always the case and the rain caught up with us just in time for my life underwater studies. Thankfully it was warm enough to still be outside but due to the frequency of the showers I based our activities under the eaves of the games room. At least water was in the theme for the afternoon.

We began with a gorgeous little mini game I’m reviewing from Orchard Toys at the moment as the children were the perfect age. It is called little bug Bingo and since many of the bugs were to be found on or around our lakes and river it felt like a good link. The children soon picked up the idea of the game taking it in turns to turn over the cards and match them to their place mats.

Play Orchard Toys Little Bug Bingo on holiday.

We moved onto a delightful story from Quarto Kids about life under the ocean. The children really took to this with the lift up flaps despite only being in black and white. There was a treat at the end as I handed out colouring pens and every one had a chance to turn the pages from black and white to colour.

We still have tadpoles in huge quantities in our lakes so we had a little look at the Frog life cycle using our bingo matching skills to place the elements of the frog life cycle into place

Matching game to understand the frog lifecycle

That was enough studying for my little ones and they were keen to see some real life underwater. In case we couldn’t get out on our underwater search I had brought a bucket of underwater life from the pond up to the table. The children crowded round to look at the tadpoles and water boatman swimming among the reeds in my bucket.  After a quick lesson in how to use a magnifying glass they were captivated.

I promised if the rain stopped we could all go to release them and see what else we could spot on the way. However first I had a fun fishing game lined up.  A bath mat became my pond with bracken leaves as fish. The children used sticky weed on sticks as fishing lines and had great fun trying to catch a fish. This is such a simple game we have used before and would be ideal to play down at a park or by a river too just by collecting things from nature.

Finally we had our break in the rain and set off with tick sheets showing life underwater in our lake and river. We spotted sticky weed and bracken in the hedges from our fishing game, stopped to look for fish swimming upstream on the bridge over the river and spotted plenty of tadpoles in the lake while I carefully replaced our bucket full.

Nature walk to study life underwater

There were plenty of tadpoles, carp popping to the surface and more bugs on the surface to tick off on our water life spotters worksheets

We came back a different route stopping to check the frog hiding under the bridge.

I was so pleased we were finally able to complete our walk and the children could see the pond life in the lakes and not just in my bucket.

Half term fun from the farm

We began our half term with the most spectacular overnight Thunderstorm I think I’ve ever seen. It was great right up until the point I released it had taken out the WiFi in time for changeover. Thank goodness for paper back up or I’d have had no idea who was arriving or where! We were back online late afternoon and since then we have enjoyed a mostly dry and really quite warm week here on the farm. Our chickens are back free ranging with the ducks ( more about that tomorrow on the blog) we had an unexpected new born lamb and my own children have been hanging out down by the river with the older guests staying.  I hope your half term has been a happy one with a few adventures to share on the link up below.

The Lostwithiel Festival or LostFest 2017

Posted on June 2nd, 2017 - Fiona

The beautiful old market town of Lostwithiel is a tourist attraction all year round with its quaint train station, river, antique shops and quirky boutiques along twisted narrow lanes. Once a year the usual peace and quiet is replaced by LostFest, the Lostwithiel Festival held each year for just one day. We have been before and loved it, as it is only half an hour from Coombe Mill and fits nicely between the morning farm run and evening train ride here.  A dry day makes all the difference and as the sun was shining we picked up a couple of Clio’s friends and Guy and set off.

The Lostwithiel Festival or Lost Fest 2017

I had forgotten how pretty Lostwithiel is in May with the wisteria draped over the old cottages.

Wisteria over Lostwithiel Cottage

Thankfully we had agreed meet up points as it was busy and the kids were off exploring while I was admiring the cottages. Delicious smells finally made everyone hungry and brought us back together after enjoying a good wander around the craft stalls with delicious smells from the pop up food stands around.  Nick and I couldn’t resist buying the giant Greek olives and sweet deserts we love for supper and I fell in love with a printed reversible skirt that even came in its own pretty reusable bag.

Stalls at the Lostwithiel festival 2017

Food is a big part of the Festival and we were spoiled for choice.  Having older children with their own tastes and ideas we just sent them off with money to make their own choices while we enjoyed a Mexican feast watching the world go by down by the river. Here we reminisced on previous years when the children were younger and would play on the rope swing still hanging from a tree on the far riverbank.  Guy caught us up with ice cream in hand and announced that he was going to go and join the kids in the river.

Eating Ice cream at LostFest 2017

I barely had time to grab my camera and head up onto the bridge before I saw him taking over the rope and land in the river! I think at this point he wished his brother Jed had come along too; the pair of them would have been showing off for hours.

Without the girls wanting to go in he was soon out and swapping a t shirt for a hoodie and joining us watching a very clever crafter turn hazel sticks into flowers.  Nick and Guy watched with interest as each flower was made in about 5 minutes. My husband is all charm and even bought me one for £2 to see if we could recreate them from our willow bush.

Meanwhile the girls had found the face painting tent and all came out with glittery moonshine faces.

However they were less than impressed when Guy took to bashing them all over the head with his newly purchased inflatable hammer!

We stopped to watch the classic Morris Dancing in the street before winding our way home after another lovely LostFest day.

Thank you all at Lostwithiel who work to bring this day together. It was a great atmosphere with some really interesting stalls and wonderful live entertainment. We are looking forward to LostFest 2018 already.

Country Kids 27.05.17 in the ducks and chickens

 Happy Bank Holiday Weekend

After a shocking week in the country with the horror of the bomb at Manchester Arena , I am ready for a little fresh air and family time this weekend. Manchester seems to have touched everyone’s life in someway, even here in Cornwall I can’t help but reflect on the fact that two of my own boys were up at a concert in the arena just a few weeks ago. A sunny weekend and family time is just what we need.

On the farm the chickens are back out of their winter chicken house in the field with the ducks and our ducklings are thriving. It’s lovely to see the guests enjoying feeding them all and searching the field for the eggs. Whatever your plans this weekend, I hope you’ll pop by and share them on the link up below.
